Delhi to Dalhousie : Weekend Getaway

What better a way to start 2019 than travelling! My first weekend getaway of this year was to Dalhousie. A lot of you know, I was in Lucknow for the New Year eve, but I had to be back in Delhi to join back by office, but somehow I wasn't feeling satisfied. I said to myself "This is not how I want to start my year", and that was it! Two of my friends had planned this trip, and asked me if I wanted to join, and I reacted spontaneously and the next I found myself at home, packing anything and everything that I found on the top in my wardrobe and running for the bus, that we boarded from Delhi for Dalhousie.

We had booked our Volvo through redBus (Indo Canadian Tpt. Co.). 3 seats costed us Rs.3685 and we boarded it from Majnu Ka Tila (North Delhi) at 9:30 PM (Friday, Jan 4). It was an overnight journey, and we had so much fun all night which included a little break that we took at Murthal for dinner, all the gossip, and some hilarious conversations. I had mostly slept since I could see nothing outside the window; it was so foggy that we'd given up peeking out! Early January it was after all. We were literally driving into "nowhere".

At 7 in the morning (Jan 5), we reached Dalhousie and it was the BEST SIGHT I'd ever witnessed. I won't lie, it was my first snow experience. It seemed like the little white balls are welcoming us, as we were reaching the bus station in Dalhousie. The locals said, it had started snowing right then, and we were lucky to witness the most beautiful snowfall! It was so fascinating, that we got off the bus and waited for almost an hour at the station, enjoying the snowfall, clicking pictures and getting cold, until we spotted a maggi point and hogged like mad in a hot plate of spicy maggi that made us feel a bit warm. You have to agree, mountain maggi is unbeatable!!!!

After a fun filled morning breaky, my travel partners - Saumya (travel blogger from RoadToTaste) and Tushar (ace photographer from Delhi) stuffed me in a cab (cab driver charged us Rs.200) and we headed towards our hotel, which was only 50 mtrs from the bus station at Moti Tiba. We also stopped at the market to fetch some umbrellas and gloves - because evidently we didn't realise while packing that it'd snow heavily at Dalhousie - the town named after The Earl of Dalhousie.

We checked in at Grand View Hotel. A property that exists since the 19th century. It is ideally located in the heart of Dalhousie, a 5 minute walk from the Mall and very close to the Tourist Bureau and The Dalhousie Club. It is beautifully maintained with a long faade of wood and glass leading onto a garden, terrace. Nestling amidst the ranges of the Himalayas, the Colonial Architecture of the Imperial Block offers the perfect ambience to rejuvenate your soul! The facilities include : Spa, Coffee Shop, Restaurant, Conference Hall, Banquet, Lounge Bar, and a Recreational Activity Area.

The Hotel offers Quality Service, Legendary Hospitality and attention at all times. The largest hotel in Dalhousie consisting of 53 rooms and suites, it is divided into three blocks Imperial, Luxury and Economy. We checked into our luxury room - we three opted to share one room which wasn't just an economical decision but the most fun one. A two day trip wouldn't be so much fun if we stayed separately! The room costed us Rs.5557 in total; was booked via goibibo. It was an insulated room so that made it cosier. It was equipped with all amenities, and the best part was the balcony from where the Himalayan snow peaks seem within touching distance. We decided to chill in the room for a while, and take a nap!

Post lunch, we got ready and went out for a walk, mostly to click photographs in snow. Later in the evening, we decided to visit Gandhi Chowk, which is about 2 kms from the hotel. We hired a cab and it took us 15 minutes to reach our destination. The roads were blocked because of traffic, so we had gotten off the cab mid way (costed us Rs.200) and walked till the chowk! We were exploring the market and it started snowing again. So much so, that within minutes the entire area was packed with snow and we could hardly see any humans! We requested a cab driver to drop us at our hotel, and very sweetly he agreed and dropped us safe (cab from Gandhi Chowk to Grand View Hotel - costed Rs.300). Hill driving is such a task, I've seen it!

We reached our hotel and went straight for dinner. Honestly, dining in the majestic British Style Multi- cuisine "Tiffins" restaurant at Grand View Hotel was an enriching experience. Tiffins, the in-house restaurant is the largest restaurant in Dalhousie!

The next morning (Jan 6), we woke up to the snow covered peaks that we could see from inside our rooms via the window glass, and once we got off from the bed, we could see our balcony covered with snow too. The view was surreal! We quickly sipped our morning coffee, and decided to explore Khajiar & Chamba, but unfortunately we were informed that due to heavy snowfall and security reasons, all roads were blocked. So, we decided to stay put at our hotel but not miss the fun! We got ready, checked out of the hotel as we had to leave for Delhi in the evening. We left our bags at the cloak room to collect them later, while leaving.

Now, our hotel had super alluring view, but in another case, we had some majestical sight to witness from the adjacent hotel - Hotel Mount View that had prettier locations to get photographed at. We literally left no spot untouched! I went back to my kid mood and played with snow like a happy baby. You won't agree more seeing my pictures, eh? These were the best moments of my life, with my favorite two.

After staying there and enjoying ourselves till 3 PM, we decided to head back to the hotel, have lunch and leave for Banikhet - till where we had to trek because the roads were shut so our bus couldn't climb up! We had to catch it from 3 kms down from Dalhousie. We quickly got a porter to carry our luggage from the hotel (costed us Rs.300). I was so scared climbing down the hill, and can't thank enough Tushar for being my support throughout. Tip : always by shoes from Woodland, they keep you gripped on the mountain roads, and you'd be able to help others walk down too! The roads were entirely covered with snow, and the cars were too. We also passed a little church that looked really pretty, covered in the white cotton like snow. After a walk of about 3 hours, we reached at the cab that dropped us a kilometre ahead till the bus stand (costed Rs.300).

We had reached before time to the bus stand, so we decided on hogging onto some tea and pakodas at a local shop in the market. The tea wasn't that great but I loved the pakodas, and was almost on the verge of ordering another plate when my partners cried "the bus is here". It was 7:50 PM, and time to bid goodbye to the beautiful city of Dalhousie! We boarded the HRTC bus from Banikhet (tickets costed us : Rs.4792, booked on redBus). Again, an over night journey to Delhi.

We reached back at 6 in the morning (Jan 7), dropped off at North Delhi. I hired a cab back home, slept for a bit and got ready for office. Back to my daily grinding!

It was a super budget trip, amazing experience and an unforgettable one. Honestly, it was the best start to the new year! And, it wouldn't have been possible if Saumya didi & Tushar wouldn't have accompanied me. They are the best travel partners in the whole wide world, undoubtedly! Mostly because one pampered me and the other one clicked the best pictures for me. *teehee*

Looking forward to more such happy trips in future. Until then, tada!

My Stay Experience at Hotel Pacific - Dehradun & Mussoorie

I’m a mountain person, and there is no other way to describe my preference for a travel destination. I enjoy the beauty of the snow peaked mountains, serenity of the valley, the cool weather of the hills, the picturesque view which keeps changing at every circuitous curve of the road and the breathtaking sunrise, than anything else. I like escaping to mountains to avoid city life and to find solace, that’s why if you’ve been keeping a tab on me you must have noticed that I have travelled to Dehradun - Mussoorie thrice in the past 10 months. TBH, there’s just something about the place that keeps calling me!

Last month was awfully busy and exasperating, adding to that was the tolling weather of Lucknow, and all that was needed was a short getaway to a cooler haven to recharge my exhausted soul. So, when I got the opportunity to visit Dehradun once again, and write a stay review for HOTEL PACIFIC, I did not spare a second thought before saying yes!

Pacific hotels, a 4 star certified hotel chain by the ministry of tourism, launched their first hotel in Dehradun about 14 years back, and it has been a favourite amongst the localities as well as travelers since day one. Situated at a prime location - just 2 kms from the Railway Station, 6 kms from the Bus stand, 20 kms from then Airport and very near from Rajpur Road, is also at close proximity to popular tourist places.

This being my first visit to Hotel Pacific Dehradun, I was quite excited to experience a 2 days stay with them. The trip was a 3 days and 2 nights, where I chose to stay at Hotel Pacific's Mussoorie property for 1 day (you can read about it as you scroll down). Coming back to their Dehradun property, it looks as grand as I imagined when I had first looked at the pictures. Luxurious interiors, stellar lighting and a combination of modern and classic architecture. Also, the royal welcome you receive as you enter the hotel shows the authenticity of the cultural era that the staff still follows, and starting from the valet, to the reception, to the stewards, everybody greets you warmly which cannot go unnoticeable.

I must mention, the lobby at Hotel Pacific is one of the most decorated lobbies of all other hotels, and it consists of Buddha statues and flowers all around giving a positive and pleasant vibe!

Hotel Pacific has a wide range of rooms to choose from - Deluxe, Super Deluxe, Executive, Royal Suite and Presidential Suite. I checked-in a royal suite on day 1, and after a worn-out flight, availing room service for breakfast looked like a smart move and it also gave me enough time to get ready. The room service staff was amiable and responsive, and I experienced the superb comfort that the hotel offers in consort with the myriad of facilities and easy connectivity within the area making it the perfect choice for people like me looking for a pleasure stay.

The room was divided in two sections - living room, with a small kitchen, a washroom, dinning table and a sofa set near the window where you can enjoy your morning tea and watch the beautiful mountains; and the second section being the bedroom with a king size bed set and an attached washroom with a luxurious bath tub and other amenities fixed! It definitely became my home for 2 days and I had the best time of my life chilling with my best friend; dancing, eating, discussing our relationships and much more away from the work hustle bustle, unloading ourselves from stress and experiencing only delight!

Prism - Coffee Shop

Post lunch, the hotel staff introduced me to the property, which features a cozy coffee shop, a gymnasium, a commodious business center and offers banquet and conference facilities for up to 500-800 people, which apparently is said to be the biggest banquet in the entire Dehradun city. Additionally, the hotel is coming up with their new parking lot which will be able to accommodate upto 150 cars. The property also has 24-hour power backup, safety deposit box, currency exchange, laundry, parking, and free Wi-Fi. It also has the in-house Pirates Bar serves a selection of local and imported spirits in a soothing ambience. Besides, it also consists of a multi-cuisine restaurant which has delicacies like Indian, Continental, Chinese and Tandoori on the menu.

It was a pleasure trying some Italian and Mexican recipes and filming a video for the hotel with their sous chef before I sat down for dinner and tasted a widespread of dishes that included : Broccoli Soup, Tex Mex Pasta, Grilled Vegetable Tortilla, Dal Nuggets, Chocolate Brownie Sundae.

-----------------------------

After a gossip-filled night spent at Hotel Pacific Dehradun, agenda for day 2 was to review the Mussoorie property. The to and fro journey for 1 and a half hours was a little adventure in itself. As I started ascending to the 'queen of hills' as the city is addressed, the temperature started to fall and the city dweller in me was awestruck by the beautiful scenery as we took one turn after the other!  In the course of the drive, we stopped for some time to admire the mesmerizing panoramic beauty that the Doon valley is, and the pristine Mussoorie Lake. The emerald water in the green backdrop of the forest terrain created a resplendent picture and the weather was favorable with picturesque waterfalls located on the way.

PS : If this sounds winsome, then you must witness the celestial city lights of the Doon valley. In the night, it appears to be layered strands of sparkling stones resting against the dark mountain silhouette and if given a chance I would stand there and watch the scenery all night!

Mussoorie Lake

Hotel Pacific Mussoorie, situated at Camel's Back - the area that restores the greenery of a reserve forest with animals, and a cemetery on the other side is built at a peace location, away from the hustle bustle of the Mussoorie city, but still close to it. Just 5 kms from the Mall Road and is accessible to all tourist locations within minutes. It's one of the favorite stay options for corporates and judges; a scenic destination for loners, writers, and peace lovers who opt for solitude often!

Spread over 50 acres of area, with 30 rooms as of now and planning to expand with 20 more cozy and beautiful rooms, Hotel Pacific Mussoorie is definitely a big crazy property that also has a huge banquet for parties and seminars, and also includes all other facilities like the Doon property of the luxurious hotel chain.

We checked-in our presidential suite and rested for a while admiring the lush green conifer-covered Himalayas, the reserve forest (we also saw langoors hopping from one tree onto the other) and sipping a hot cup of coffee while the clouds floated wistfully in front of us and the cool winds brushing which became the highlights of the property.

Presidential Suite - divided into sections (Bedroom + Living Room)

Hotel Pacific takes pride in their food, and I would agree that be it Dehradun or Mussoorie, they serve the best Indian and Continental cuisines to their guests. We opted for lunch in our room and it consisted of an array of Indian dishes. The entire meal was extravagant, that included - Assorted Veggie Salad, Sprouted Salad, Dal Makhni, Paneer Bemisal, Mushroom Do Pyaza, Assorted Breads, Peas Pulao (main course), Papad and Masala Chaas (sides) and Kesri Kheer (dessert)

Lunch scenes with Hera (my best friend)

-----------------------------

If you're looking for a quick getaway for a valley-hill experience with your family or friends, or searching for a cool wedding destination, Hotel Pacific Dehradun or Mussoorie should be your first choice. People who wish to plan their stay at luxury hotels can trust Pacific Hotels without any qualms. I can certify that the lofty hills of Mussoorie, the voluble waterfalls, lush forest and the captivating Doon valley, will simply take your breath away!

Huge thanks to Mr. Prashant Nagalia (the owner) and his entire team from the hotel for an amazing hospitality and a super comfortable stay. Looking forward to visit Hotel Pacific soon again!
